Fish City named one of UK’s 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants

Fry Magazine • 13 March 2024

Fish City in Belfast has been named as one of the UK’s 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants 2024 - the only dine-in chippy in Northern Ireland to make the prestigious list.

It follows a mystery dining visit by leading trade publication Fry Magazine in which judges meticulously inspected aspects including food quality, premises cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, ease of ordering, and social media presence.

With the pass mark set high at 95%, Fish City scored an impressive 99% with the mystery diner particularly praising the friendly, professional staff and the high quality of food freshly cooked to order. “We had a great experience from arrival to leaving the restaurant. The service was very friendly, and the food was delicious.”

“The food was perfectly presented. The fish was delicious, white and flaky. The batter was golden, crisp and even. The chips were perfect, a nice mix of sizes, hot and crisp, but not too crisp.”

The mystery diner added, “The staff members were great and totally focussed on efficiency and nicely serving customers. We had great customer service from lovely staff members. The experience was perfect.”

John Lavery, owner of Fish City, said: “It is a tremendous honour to make Fry Magazine’s prestigious list of the 10 Best Fish and Chip Restaurants in the UK for our third consecutive year. This means so much to our small independent business, and it is a testament to the work of our incredible team here in providing our guests with great dining experiences, the finest fish and chips, and warm customer service. I want to thank Fry Magazine on this wonderful recognition, our staff for their hard work, and of course all of our customers for their support.”

Reece Head, competition organiser, says: “It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Fish City on being one of the UK’s 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants.

“Despite the formidable challenges posed by inflationary pressures that have affected every aspect of the industry, these remarkable establishments continue to deliver top quality fish and chips using the finest ingredients. Their dedication extends beyond the plate, as they invest in cutting-edge equipment to facilitate seamless and swift transactions, coupled with rigorous training in customer service. Uncompromising in their standards, they are truly the best in the business and deserve their recognition.”
