A Belfast restaurant has been awarded a top honour at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2020.
The awards are a UK-wide competition which aim to celebrate "true excellence" in the industry organised by Seafish, the public body that supports the seafood industry.
Fish City took home the Menu Development and Innovation Award, which acknowledges fish and chip businesses that excel in educating and informing their customers on dietary and healthy eating choices and the nutritional values of fish and chips.
The restaurant battled it out with two other shortlisted finalist businesses to take home the prestigious award.
Judges looked for evidence of menu development and innovation when promoting healthier options as well as assessing customer health awareness methods and employee training procedures focusing on dietary requirements, ‘free from’ products, allergens and ingredients knowledge.
A final round of judging also scrutinised front and back-of-house practices.
Marcus Coleman, chief executive at Seafish, congratulated the team at Fish City on their "comprehensive and experimental menu".
He said: "Modern fish and chip businesses are able to cater for a wider variety of customer requirements than ever before, and Fish City is the perfect example of a business getting this right.
"The breadth of options they offer and the commitment shown to constantly innovating is a real inspiration and the reason they won this award.
“Fish City has also done a great job of promoting fish and chips as a superior nutritional offering when compared to many other takeaway options - a portion is rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamin B6 and B12, iron, calcium and phosphorous, as well as crucially important dietary fibre."
He added: "Fish City has invested in showing just how diverse a fish and chip shop menu can be, and that’s what makes them a stand out candidate in this category. We wish them the best of luck for the future.”
