Seafood and fish and chip restaurant Fish City in the heart of Belfast has won the top prize of a £2,000 holiday voucher as part of Nortech Foods’ A Plaice in The Sun giveaway.

Nortech Foods launched the promotion in the summer of last year to support fish and chip shops across the UK after what was, and continues to be, a challenging few years.

Fish City is on a winning streak, having been named one of Fry Magazine’s 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants 2023 and also crowned the winner of Fish & Chip Restaurant of the Year and the Environment & Sustainability Award at the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards in February.

Commenting on this latest prize, owner John Lavery says: “We’re over the moon at this generosity from Nortech. It’s a very unexpected surprise, and it is lovely to have this recognition from one of our suppliers.

“As many know, running your own business can be all-consuming, and holiday plans are often the last thing on the agenda. To have this wonderful voucher means that a holiday is already in place, and we are so grateful.”

Fish City has used Superior refined and deodorised beef dripping from Nortech Foods to fry a host of menu items including its MSC cod, salt and chilli chicken and battered prawns ever since it opened in 2013. John adds: “We’ve always found Superior to be a consistent and high quality frying medium, giving a unique flavour and product.”

The team monitor the oil on a daily basis to keep it in prime condition, checking the total polar materials (TPM) and adjusting it on that basis. “We remove dirty oil and replace it with fresh blocks,” adds John.

With the choice of frying medium being so important to serving quality fish and chips, John adds: “It’s one of the crucial elements to produce a top-quality product consistently. It’s why we use Superior and it’s why our checks are done on a daily and continuous basis.”

Leanne Green, sales and commercial manager at Nortech Foods, adds: “It was an absolute pleasure to meet John and present him with his ‘A Plaice in The Sun’ holiday voucher. He works tirelessly to ensure the quality of food and the menu variation is second to none, with a wide range of fish and seafood options. However, it’s the fish and chips fried in Superior beef dripping that are truly drawing the customers in!”
