The National Fish and Chip Awards celebrate excellence in the UK Fish and Chip industry - showcasing the best businesses in 14 award categories each year. The UK’s Top 10 Fish and Chip restaurants have been revealed today as part of the 2020 National Fish & Chip Awards.

Belfast’s Fish City has been named Northern Ireland’s top fish and chip restaurant. The Ann Street eaterie will now compete against nine other finalists for the title of best in the UK.

A NORTHERN Ireland chipper has been named on the 10-strong shortlist of nominees for the title of the UK’s best fish and chip restaurant.

Once again, entries were compelling for the Seafood Restaurant of the Year competition organised by The Caterer in partnership with Seafish UK, so much so that the judges have announced a strong list of 12 semi-finalists.

Fish City in Belfast is celebrating this month having won a Catey award at the prestigious ceremony in London earlier this month. Considered the Oscars of the Hospitality Industry, over 1200 of the great and the good from the UK hospitality sector attended the award ceremony.

The award of the Health and Nutrition Catey to Fish City is well deserved and shows what fish and chip restaurants can achieve. Judge Nicky Martin summed up: “It’s fantastic to see the nation’s favourite meal has been reformulated and packaged to align with health goals. Fish and chips may be perceived as unhealthy but, cooked correctly and portioned appropriately, it can be a perfectly balanced meal – as shown by Fish City.”

Fish City and the Mourne Seafood Bar have both been shortlisted as semi-finalists in the 2018 Seafood Restaurant of the Year competition. The award, presented by Seafish and The Caterer, is designed to find the best restaurants in the UK cooking and serving delicious seafood dishes.

I would like to tell you that this place is, today, the best restaurant I have visited. Not only for its food, which is exquisite, but also for the philosophy of the place.

Fish City is reeling in a new generation of fish lovers with Northern Ireland's first ‘Kids' Club’ in the industry. The Ann Street restaurant and takeaway will educate kids about the health benefits of eating seafood. By teaching primary school pupils about the health benefits of fish and the importance of protecting our oceans and actively supporting seafood sustainability, they will begin to eat more fish.

John and Grainne Lavery opened Fish City on Ann Street Belfast last summer and have been winning awards and attracting new customers at a staggering rate for such a new business. However, they have both recognised that when families bring their children for lunch or dinner, the majority are not ordering fish!

Fish for Fundraising! John Lavery of Fish City Belfast will be welcoming the RNLI this coming Friday as they fundraise to support the local charity. Aiming to raise enough funds to train another potential volunteer for Kilkeel RNLI Station, this charity is close to John’s heart.

Fish City, which opened in Belfast last year, has just won ‘Best Seafood Establishment’ at The Food Awards Northern Ireland 2017.
